As the world reels from the first few months of a new American presidency and its administration’s headlong rush to implement an unjust and divisive agenda, it’s hard to not lose faith in a hopeful future for humanity. Yet as those familiar with the esoteric teachings given out in Alice A. Bailey’s and Benjamin Creme’s books about the externalization of the Hierarchy know: crisis is often a catalyst for a breakdown of old structures, and destruction ever precedes the building of the new.
If we look back to another relatively recent pivotal moment in world history, the period of the World Wars we can observe the Spiritual Hierarchy’s efforts to help guide humanity in a time of great chaos. The American President at that time, Franklin D Roosevelt was an initiate who through his office exhibited the qualities of vision, courage, and dedication to the greater good — expressions of soul consciousness that enabled tremendous improvements to the life of his fellow Americans and all of humanity, particularly through his work to secure peace throughout the world in the founding of the United Nations.
In 1934, a close disciple of the Master Morya, Helena Roerich, was given the task of sharing the Masters’ guidance directly with Roosevelt. This took place through letters she wrote to him, beginning in the autumn of that year, hand delivered by two of her close associates. Although the President knew nothing about the “Himalayan Brotherhood,” he evidently received and took these messages to heart as inspired advice. These letters, written between October 1934 and January 1936, were recently published in a book attributed to Helena Roerich entitled: The Secret World Government, Cosmic Guidance for the Leader. The original copies can be found in the Franklin D Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, New York.
In her first letter to Roosevelt, written 10 October, 1934, Roerich shares her mission, “At the austere hour when the entire world stands at the threshold of reconstruction and the fate of many countries is being weighed on the Cosmic Scales, I am writing to You from the Himalayan Heights, to offer You the Highest Help. The Help of that Source, which since time immemorial stands on constant Vigil, observing and directing the march of world events into saving channels. History of all times and all peoples bears witness to this Help, which concealed from public notoriety, is usually extended at the turning point in the history of countries.”
She then goes on to share notable examples of such counsel from the past, including warnings given to Marie Antoinette, Napoleon, Queen Victoria and the government of Russia. She explains that George Washington, one of the founding fathers of America had received advice from a mysterious professor, as well as the fact that at the signing of the Declaration of Independence a tall stranger rose from amidst the audience and proclaimed that “America would be free!”
Saying that the destiny of the country is in his hands, Roerich tells Roosevelt it is still up to him to accept or reject the “Great Messages from the same One Source”: “America has reached the boundary of the turning point in her History. Precisely, America can reach her great significance and peaceful bounty. You, Mr. President, have realised that with the outlived measures, which have reduced the world to its present state of destruction, [it] is impossible to build the welfare and the future of the Country. You are indefatigably and courageously seeking ways of new constructiveness. You have understood that the Bird of Spirit of humanity cannot fly on one wing and hence you have given the due place to Woman. You can be not only the Ruler but the true great leader.”
The book The Secret World Government, Cosmic Guidance for the Leader notes that upon receipt of this historic message, Roosevelt developed a profound interest in Helena Roerich and, from that moment on, eagerly anticipated her responses. His responding questions were always delivered orally rather than in writing. In her subsequent letter, Roerich replies she’s happy that his “…great heart has so beautifully accepted the Message and Your light-bearing mind was free from prejudice, this horrible contagion which extinguishes in us the divine and creative fire of faith.”
She then imparts verbatim the message she has been entrusted to share with him. The advice given covers many topics: the need to maintain a vigilant resistance to being drawn into war, with hints that this provocation would come from “the East.” There is a suggestion to maintain military strength despite public opposition — asserting that a formidable defence can successfully deter aggression. Warnings are given, highlighting the American Midwest’s vulnerability to wheat crop failures, urging proactive grain storage and expanded cultivation in northern and eastern regions. Further letters speak of the need for Roosevelt to help form a Pan-American relationship uniting the countries of North and South America. Imparted also is the fact that America has since long ago had a link with Asia, as well as information that Russia is the “equibalance” of America and “…only with such a construction will the World Peace become a solved problem.”
During the same period, in 1934, Helena Roerich’s book “Guidance for the Leader” was brought by Nicholas Roerich to the United States and presented as a gift to President Roosevelt via Henry Wallace, his Secretary for Agriculture, who was a great admirer of Nicholas Roerich’s work on cultural initiatives through the Roerich Pact. Guidance for the Leader was based on conversations Helena Roerich had with her Master, the Master Morya. The book aimed to inspire a new generation of leaders dedicated to serving humanity across various spheres of life. It offers advice on parenting, education, economics, and emphasizes principles for enlightened leadership in both personal and public life. While intended for those in power, its spiritual teachings are applicable to anyone in daily life. This book, in its entirety, is included in the text of The Secret World Government, Cosmic Guidance for the Leader, published in 2023.
The correspondence between Helena Roerich and Roosevelt ended in January of 1936, soon after it was discovered by Roerich that the two close long-time associates she had entrusted to hand deliver her letters to the White House — Louis and Nettie Horch — had betrayed her trust on one occasion by sharing some advice of their own while maintaining that it had come from Helena Roerich’s own Source. The advice they had fabricated was related to investments and they had hoped to financially profit from actions that Roosevelt might take in response to such advice.
As evidenced through the writings of Helena Blavatsky, Helena Roerich, Alice A Bailey, and Benjamin Creme, the Spiritual Hierarchy has helped to guide the progress of humanity since the dawn of man on our planet, and this no doubt continues today. In the article A Time of Change from the book A Master Speaks, Benjamin Creme’s Master notes the challenges faced in this complex process:
“Almost without exception, the nations of the world are experiencing profound changes, both internally and in relation to each other. This process is the direct result of the energetic stimulus now pervading the planet as a whole, and will lead eventually to a complete transformation of the existing structures. To quicken these changes is Our desire and wish, but so great today are the tensions that We must proceed with care; too much pressure here or there could have disastrous consequences for large sections of the world. Hence Our cautious approach to the problems which face man today. Change must proceed in an orderly fashion or chaos will result. … Always, Our aim is the achievement of ordered change with the minimum of cleavage. Look, therefore, for Our hand in world events and judge them wisely. Much that takes place is fashioned by Us and must eventuate in a better world. When you see Us, you will know that this world is in safe keeping.”
